Fundamentals of Digital Marketing- A Beginner's Guide

The buzz word going around all branding, advertising, and entrepreneurial companies today is ‘digital marketing.’ It’s obvious why this topic has been set in trend – of course, everything has gone digital, so why not marketing?

If you are just intrigued by the concept of Digital Marketing and are new to the subject, not to worry- you’ve arrived at a crisp Beginner’s Guide to Digital Marketing.

If you would just Google ‘Fundamentals of Digital Marketing,’ tons of results will fill up before you. Here are some off the text-book, or should we say off the web, tips that would help you become a great Digital Marketer.

Let’s get started, shall we?

#1. Know Your Buyer’s Persona

We don’t just mean know it like how you “know” the President, we mean know it like how you “know” your best friend.

Take time to put yourself in your potential buyer’s shoes and try to empathize. It may get confusing but trust us, it’s worth it.

So, what is a buyer’s persona?

It’s nothing by a representation of your prospective buyer’s demographics, behaviors, interests, challenges, motivation, and goals. When you draft a clear list of these things, it becomes easier for you to think from your customer’s perspective.

For instance, say you are a fashion brand trying to sell fancy jewelry. In this case, your customer is probably:

  • A middle-aged woman,
  • Who lives in an urban city,
  • Works at a tech company,
  • Wants to be fashionable and hi-fi, and
  • Keeps looking up clothes or jewelry online.

#2. Plan Your Content

Once you have a draft of your buyer’s persona, it’s essential to know what, when, and how you are going to present yourself or your brand to your customer. In order to do so, you need to plan your content. Makes sense?

So, how do you plan your content?

  • Have a timeline. Draft out what kind of content goes out where and when you want to post.
  • Remember that your audience is in one of the three stages of buying- awareness, consideration, and decision. Make appropriate content to match each customer’s stage.
  • Also, remember to store all content, so you can retrieve, revamp, and reuse with minimal efforts.

#3. Focus On Branding

In general, we attribute branding to a wider reach that brings in engagement and ultimately sales. Although the pathway is similar, one key concept tends to be left out in this case. What is it?

Value.

Make sure that all your blogs and posts are pivoted on ‘giving value’ to your customer. As you keep giving value, your customer begins to trust your brand, invariably bringing sales.

How do you give value? Focus on the pain-points and talk about how your brand solves their problem.

#4. Be Consistent With Follow-ups

As we discussed earlier, a potential customer is either in the awareness, consideration, or decision stages. It is important to keep a track of the stage that your customer is in. Sometimes you may even have to give them that additional nudge to go ahead into the next stage.

What do we mean?

For instance, if you are aware that a potential buyer, the middle-aged fashionista whose persona we had earlier drafted, is considering your jeweler set, sending in a positive review of the same from another customer may just do the trick!

#5. Focus on SEO results too!

Here’s a fundamental digital marketing tip that is usually overlooked because it’s so obvious!

Paid ads and shoutouts are a great way to grow quickly, we agree. However, with organic search rising by the day, it’s vital to also pay attention to your organic reach.

Being SEO-friendly is a great way to establish authenticity, especially if you are a budding brand. It gives you validity and says that you know what you are talking about.

Besides, SEM without SEO may prove dangerous!
